Dru Coleman JohnsonDru Coleman Johnson, 60, of Florence, Alabama, passed away Friday, October 5th, after a courageous 20-month battle with ovarian cancer.

Daughter of an Air Force officer, Dru was born in Caribou, Maine and grew up on Air Force bases around the world.  She called Fort Walton Beach, Florida home and graduated from Choctawhatchee High School in 1976. She went on to graduate with a B.S. in Accounting from Auburn University in 1980. While at Auburn, Dru forged friendships in her sorority, Alpha Gamma Delta, which would last a lifetime and continued to stay a devoted Auburn Tiger fan.

Dru worked in financial services and employee benefits administration for a number of different financial institutions and, most recently, at TNT Fireworks.

Dru was a devoted member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where she was active in Alter Guild. She also volunteered her time at the Help Center in downtown Florence, and served on the board of the Westminster Interfaith Care Place (WICP). In her spare time, she enjoyed playing tennis with Shoals Tennis and consistently beat both her husband and daughters in family matches.

Dru and her husband, Jeff, lived a number of different places in the United States and abroad, and travelled extensively throughout Asia. Some of her favorite years were spent living in Shanghai, China where she was a pearl-shopper extraordinaire.

Dru’s pride and joy were her two daughters, Rachel and Claire; from PTA activities and team volleyball mom, to wedding planning and passing along her home decorating prowess, there was never a task in which she did not revel and excel.

She is survived by her parents, Drew and Geraldine Coleman of Atlanta, Georgia; her husband, Jeff Johnson, her two daughters and son-in-law, Rachel Johnson and Matthew Rushing of Durham, North Carolina, and Claire Johnson of Birmingham, Alabama; her two sisters, Beth Coleman Yates and Karen Coleman Fitzgerald, both of Atlanta, Georgia; and by 6 nieces and nephews.

A funeral service in memory of Dru will be held on Saturday, October 13th, at 3:00 pm, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 410 North Pine Street in Florence, Alabama. There will be a visitation preceding the service from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the church.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers or other gifts, donations be made to Trinity Episcopal Church for the commission of a stained glass window in memory of Dru.
