Daniel "Danny" R. GrimesDaniel “Danny” R. Grimes, age 76, of Mt. Airy, North Carolina, and formerly of Columbia, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, October 4, 2018 at his residence in Mt. Airy.

Danny was born on January 5, 1942, to Hildreth D. and Mary Hazel Johnson Grimes, in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee. He was well respected by all who knew him, having served three tours in Vietnam, while in the U. S. Army. He was honorably discharged after serving twelve years, and achieving the rank of Staff Sargent. Danny was proud of his heritage as a Cherokee Indian, and lived on the reservation for many years. He was a little man, with a great big heart, and was well loved by his family and friends. He was a skilled contractor, and was of the Baptist faith.

Danny is survived by his daughter: Dana (Kenny) Lovell; son: Brandon: long-time partner: siblings: Mary Jo Pedigo, Barbara Hodge, Linda (Everette) Martin, Hilda Hunnicutt, Catherine (Robert) Warf, James W. (Donna) Grimes, Derl Grimes, Tony (Jenny) Grimes; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents: H. D. and Mary Hazel Grimes; and sisters: Willie Yvonne Grimes and Delores Grimes Ellis.

Funeral services for Danny will be held on Monday, October 8, 2018 in the Chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with Allen Lancaster, Derl Grimes and Jim Grimes officiating. Burial will follow at Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the United States Army Honor Guard. The family will visit with friends on Monday, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., also at the funeral home, immediately prior to the service.

Nephews: Todd Prince, Damien Prince, Kip Lindsey, Daniel Ellis, Tyler Lancaster and William “Scooter” Ellis will serve as pallbearers.
