MUSCLE SHOALS-The Muscle Shoals Police Department released a statement concerning a Suicide oldat Shoals Hospital on Sunday, September 9:

“PRESS RELEASE
SUICIDE: SHOALS HOSPITAL
September 9, 2018

At approximately 6:44am, Muscle Shoals Police patrol units responded to the call of a gunshot victim at Shoals Hospital. Based upon initial reports indicating the possibility of a gunman inside the facility, surrounding agencies also responded to the scene. Those threats were quickly found to be unsubstantiated as Muscle Shoals patrol officers determined that this was an isolated event.

MSPD officers located the victim, William Nichols (79), deceased inside an elevator within the facility. Nichols had sustained an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Muscle Shoals Police Detectives recovered evidence both at the scene and the victim’s residence which further indicated that the event was self-inflicted.

Video surveillance footage indicated that Nichols entered the main entrance alone, walked directly to and entered the elevator where he was found deceased. At no time during this event did Nichols initiate contact with any Shoals Hospital staff member or patient.

Muscle Shoals Police Department would like to thank Tuscumbia Police Department, Colbert County Sheriff’s Department, and Sheffield Police Department for their response.”
