James Edward Barnett – Obituary

James Edward Barnett, 97, died Wednesday, August 15. He was born and spent his entire life in Rogersville, where he was a long-term member of the Rogersville Church of Christ.

Mr. Barnett was a farmer for his entire life, raising both row crops and livestock. He was a charter member of the Lauderdale County Cattlemen’s Association, and served as its president from 1963-65. He was a Supervisor for the Lauderdale County Soil and Water Conversation District from 1959-1995 and served as it’s treasurer for most of those years. He served in leadership roles for several support organizations for Lauderdale County High School, the town of Rogersville, and Lauderdale County agriculture. He was a substitute mail carrier for all Rogersville mail routes from the 1950’s until the mid 1970’s when he became the full-time carrier for the new Rogersville Rural Route 4.

Mr. Barnett was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Air Corps as a flight crew chief with assignments in the South Pacific and stateside.

There will be a visitation from 3 – 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 18th at the Rogersville Church of Christ. Service will follow immediately at 4 with Alex Bayes and Windell Gann officiating. Internment will be in Civitan Cemetery with military honors.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Oliver and Annie Rose Barnett, his wife of 61 years Muriel Hurn Barnett, son-in-law Marty Broman, and sister Mildred Grisham.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty Ann Broman and Judy Hill; four grandchildren: David Hill, Melissa (Brad) Watson, Michael Broman, and Katy Broman; one great-grandson Landon Watson.

Pall Bearers will be Donald Reeves, Randy Reeves, Jerry Page, Gerald Whitman, Charles Hardy, and Tom Hardy.
