Irene Wise Hamer was born to the late George C. and Cora Floyd Wise on January 11, 1921 in Kansas City, Kansas. She departed this life on Tuesday, August 14, 2018. As a child, the family moved to Tuscumbia, Alabama where she resided for over ninety years.
She was life-long member of Lesley Temple CME Church, Tuscumbia, Alabama. She graduated from Trenholm High School and attended Alabama State Teachers College (now Alabama State University). She retired after 22 years of service at Helen Keller Hospital in Sheffield, Alabama.
She was preceded in death by her husband James C. Hamer, daughter Cora Bonita Hamer Speight, and siblings Floyd Wise and Roberta Wise Webb.
She is survived by two daughters Gwendolyn Irene (Robert, Sr.) Yarbrough, Statesboro, Georgia, Nedra Lorene McDaniel, Huntsville, Alabama; a son-in-law Terry L. Speight, Madison, Alabama; a twin sister, Lorene Wise Bailey, Tuscumbia, Alabama; a sister-in-law, Mattie Hamer (Abram) Pruitt, Florissant, Missouri; a special daughter and son, Frankye Moxley Calloway and William Harold Calloway, Sr., Evansville, Indiana; six grandchildren, Robert L. (Carey) Yarbrough, Jr., Alexandria, Virginia, Michael C. (Dhana) Yarbrough, Edmond, Oklahoma, Eric L. McDaniel, Austin, Texas, Meagan T. and Kevin J. Speight, Long Island City, New York, and Kyle E. Speight, Gilbert, Arizona; two special grandchildren, Anika M. Calloway, Atlanta, Georgia, and William H. (Karina) Calloway, Jr., Los Angeles, California; five great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation with the family will be Friday, 6-8:00pm, Thompson and Son Funeral Home, Tuscumbia, AL.
Funeral service for Mrs. Hamer will be:
