Lawrence Loyd Williams – Obituary

Lawrence Loyd Williams, 97, passed away on August 14, 2018 at North Mississippi Medical Center Hospice Unit. He was born May 2, 1921, to the late Monroe Steve Williams and Melverta Palmer Williams in Fulton. He married Opal G. Williams on November 30, 1946 and was married for 71 years.
He was a member of the Bean’s Ferry Church of Christ since 1942. He served as a deacon for 30 years and served as an elder for 20 years. He was a Bible School teacher during all those years.
He was a “Proud World War II Veteran” who served in the United States Army from September 1942 – December 1945 with the 83rd Chemical Mortar Batallion. He served a tour of duty in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and Southern France. He was a member of the American Legion (Post 51 Fulton) for 73 years.

He attended elementary school at Friendship, Tilden, and Fulton. He graduated from IAHS in 1943. He was a member of the first class at Itawamba Junior College in 1948. He graduated from Mississippi State University in 1952.

He began his teaching career in 1952 at Mantachie High School as a Science teacher. He was principal at Tremont High School from 1954-1959. From 1959 -1983 at the Fulton Jr. High School he served as principal, assistant principal, Biology teacher and Driver’s Education teacher. He retired in May, 1983.

He enjoyed watching football games and Fox News. He enjoyed playing Dominoes. He took pride in growing vegetables in his garden.

Lawrence leaves three children: Larry (Beth) Williams and Judy (Perry) Britt, both of Tupelo, and Cathy (Terry) McCarthy of Fulton; five grandchildren: Michael (Mindy) Williams of Germantown, TN, Whitney (Ryan) Payne of Nettleton, Katie (Sam) McDuffie of Nettleton, Anna (Jonathan) Begnaud of Tupelo, and Christopher (Kara) Britt of Palestine, AR; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Opal Williams; his four sisters: Era Palmer, Mary Geneva Pierce, Vera Thomas, Gena Miles and his brother Alfred Williams.

Funeral services with military honors will be at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, August 15, at the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Fulton with Ministers Leslie Grant and Steve Shappley officiating. Burial will be at Itawamba Memorial Gardens in Fulton.

Pallbearers will be Mike McLeod, Milton Barlow, John Wilson, Robert Pierce, Michael Williams, and Christopher Britt.

Visitation will be from 2:00 until service time on Wednesday at the funeral home
