Lauderdale County Grand Jury Returns Indictment For Rape And Sexual Abuse Against Florence Man

Steven Marcus Burge

FLORENCE-The Florence Police Department issued a press release concerning the indictment of a suspect in Sexual crimes stemming from an incident in May of 2017:

“Steven Marcus Burge was arrested August 7, 2018 following an indictment issued by a recent Lauderdale County Grand Jury. 

Burge is accused of forcefully raping and sexually abusing his 20-year-old female victim.  The rape occurred in May 2017, at an apartment located in the 200blk of N. Pine St. in Florence.  Burge and the victim were acquaintances through mutual friends at the time of the crime.  Due to the nature and sensitivity of this crime we will not be releasing the victim’s information at this time. 

Burge has been charged with Rape 1st a Class A Felony, and Sexual Abuse 1st a Class C Felony, and is being held in the Lauderdale County Detention Center.

 His bond is set at $100,000 for the above charges.  Burge was already being held on a $12,000 bond for previous unrelated charges, bringing his total bond to $112,000.

A person commits the crime of rape in the first degree if:

(1) He or she engages in sexual intercourse with a member of the opposite sex by forcible compulsion;  or

(2) He or she engages in sexual intercourse with a member of the opposite sex who is incapable of consent by reason of being physically helpless or mentally incapacitated;  or

(3) He or she, being 16 years or older, engages in sexual intercourse with a member of the opposite sex who is less than 12 years old.

A person commits the crime of sexual abuse in the first degree if:

(1) He subjects another person to sexual contact by forcible compulsion;  or

(2) He subjects another person to sexual contact who is incapable of consent by reason of being physically helpless or mentally incapacitated”
