FLORENCE-As the City of Florence continues to celebrate its Bicentennial, the focus for the month of August is the very interesting history of educational opportunities in our great town.
The Florence City Schools Memorabilia Room, located in the Burrell-Slater School building on the corner of West College and Cherokee Streets, will be open between 10:00 A.M and 3:00 P.M. on these dates:
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, August 7-9
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, August 14-16
Visitors must enter the parking lot at the rear of the building on West College Street and enter the building through the double doors beside the gymnasium. Admission is free!
The excellent archival collection on the third floor in Collier Library on the campus of the University of North Alabama will be open to the public free of charge from 8:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M. on these dates:
Monday through Friday, August 27-31
At 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, August 12, Billy Warren will make an hour-long presentation on the history of education in Florence. This free program will take place at the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library.
Take time in August to celebrate the good news that the City of Florence has been an education-centered town since its first school was established on the John Coffee family plantation in 1820 – just wo years after the City’s official founding.
