Marie Wilson Nebrig – Obituary

Marie Wilson Nebrig was born March 9, 1921 and passed away on August 2, 2018. She was born in Giles County, Tennessee to Oma Evans Wilson and Earl Wilson. She moved to Athens at an early age and was educated in the local schools and at Athens College. Marie interned in Medical Technology at Nashville General Hospital and worked in hospitals in Kentucky and Birmingham before moving to Decatur in 1946. She was the first Registered Medical Technologist of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists in Decatur at that time. Her working span performing clinical procedures covered 40 years before she retired in 1983.

Marie was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1947. She served as a deacon and was active in the Presbyterian Women. Marie loved to sew and along with other members of the PW, she used her talent to make many garments for needy children, as well as gifts for friends and family over the years.

She and her husband, Herman, were members of the Decatur Country Club for over 50 years and Marie was an active member of the Women’s Golf Association. She played golf until she was 95 years old and had 4 holes-in-one during her golfing years.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herman Albert Nebrig, Sr. and her sister, Sara Wilson Kacala.

Survivors include sons, H. Albert, Jr. (Janet) of Hoover and David Earl of Decatur; grandchildren, Michael Nebrig (Krista), Emily Marie Nebrig Jordan (Troy) and Kathryn Nebrig Herring (Rusty); great-grandchildren, Finn, Shands, Hollis and Taber Nebrig, Anna Marie and Meghan Jordan, and Ellis, Coleman and Ransom Herring.

There will be a visitation with the family at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Jackson Street at noon Saturday and a Celebration of Life at 1 p.m. followed by graveside service at Decatur City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church. Arrangements by Ridout’s Brown-Service Funeral Home.
