Charles Ward Barnes – Obituary

Charles Ward Barnes, 81, passed away Wednesday, August 1, 2018, at the Tupelo Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born April 16, 1937, in Itawamba County to Chester and Josie Scott Barnes. He worked for 44 years as a gas chromatography lab supervisor for Universal Oil Products in McCook, Ill. He was member of the First Baptist Church in Mantachie and was a member of the state championship basketball team during his high school years at Mantachie High School. He enjoyed working crossword puzzles and watching sports, especially the Chicago Bulls and Cubs.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 4, at the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Mantachie with Dr. John Adams and Dr. Doug Hawkins officiating. Burial will be in Center Star Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Geneva Wooldridge Barnes of Mantachie; his daughter, Angie Barnes Henegar (Jeff) of Columbia, MO; his daughter-in-law, Rose Barnes of Lemont, Ill.; two brothers, Joe Barnes of Mantachie and Don Barnes of Hoover, Ala.; five grandchildren, Nathan Barnes, Bethany Barnes, Hayden Elder, Baylie Elder, and Rebecca Henager; and two great-grandchildren, Alex Barnes and Nadia Barnes.

He was preceded in death by his son, Mitch Barnes; his parents; and three brothers, Z.I. Barnes, Jimmy Barnes, and William Barnes.

Pallbearers will be Hayden Elder, Nathan Barnes, Brett Barnes, Oscar Barnes, Michael Wooldridge, Lee Loden, and Freddie Yielding.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 3, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ward Barnes Memorial Fund at St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
