Dorothy Carter McDonald – Obituary

Dorothy Carter McDonald, age 90 died Saturday July 21, 2018.  Visitation (lying in state) will be in the atrium of First United Methodist Church, Florence during the house before the service.   The service will begin at 2:00pm Wednesday July, 25 in the Church Sanctuary with Rev. Dale Cohen officiating. Burial will be in Florence City Cemetery.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she was active in the music department, United Methodist Women and Spiritual Growth studies.

She received BS and MA degrees in Art Education at Florence State Teacher’s College where she was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and the Delta Mu Chapter of Kappa Pi.   She taught studio art and the Humanities at Deshler High School, Tuscumbia; Coffee High School, Florence and Faulkner University.

Her portraits and landscapes are represented in Universities, museums and private collections throughout the Southeast and Northeast, as well as in the homes and civic buildings in this area including all artwork in the Indian Mound Museum.

She has illustrated books; particularly her husband’s and created the Bluewater Publishing Company seal.

She taught studio art at home and high school to many including Huntsville Museum’s art work of Jon Paul Stevenson.    She also taught her daughters and nieces Paula, Beth, Edna; and nephews Oliver Carter and Jeffrey McDonald.

She and her husband have two daughters, Nancy Carter McDonald (Pat) and Suzannah Lee Parasiliti (Brian).

Grandchildren – Carter M. Buttram, Lindsey Buttram Middleton, Andrew William McClellan, Amanda McClellan Hale, Michael McDonald Backensto.    Step grandchildren – Brianna P. Williamson, Anthony and Brian Parasiliti, Jr.    Great grandchildren are Will Middleton, Mark Middleton, August Holloway and Colton and Harper Williamson.

The family gives special thanks to Dr. Michael Mitchell, Debra Jackson for her many years of care and to Mary Nell Krieger, Brenda Krieger and Sarah Bennett for their time of care.

Pallbearers are Carter Buttram, Andrew McClellan, Michael Backensto, Cory Hale, Anthony and Brian Parasiliti, Jr.

Honorary Pallbearers – John Thomas McDonald, Jeffery McDonald.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the local Humane society or to the First United Methodist Church in Florence.
