The Federal National Renewable Energy Laboratory ranks TVA fifth among public power providers’ green pricing programs for 2017.

TENNESSEE VALLEY-The Federal National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) ranks TVA fifth among public power providers’ utility green pricing programs for 2017. This is a significant jump up from TVA’s eighth position the year before. Only Portland General Electric, Sacramento Municipal Utility District, PacifiCorp and Texas-based Austin Energy had higher public power green energy sales last year.

TVA’s two programs, Green Power Switch and Southeastern RECs, generated 504,227 megawatt-hours of renewable power in 2017. Green Power Switch is a renewable energy program for small business that supports wind, solar and biogas energy generated in the Tennessee Valley. TVA continues to increase the percentage of solar power as part of the power mix; in 2018, solar will generate 70 percent in the renewable energy in the Tennessee Valley.

The NREL list also found seven of the top-10 green power sales rates in the country were from public power utilities, including local power company Oak Ridge (Tennessee) Electric Department, which sells more than 7 percent of its power from TVA’s green energy sources.

Tammy Bramlett, director of Business Development & Renewables, says TVA has earned a top-10 ranking for Green Power Sales on the NREL list since 2013. “It’s a testament to the hard work of the renewables team,” she says. “It also highlights TVA’s commitment to providing renewable options for our customers while ensuring we maintain our mission of service to all people in the Valley.”

NREL, based in Golden, Colorado, and Washington, D.C., is the only federal laboratory dedicated to the research, development, commercialization and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. NREL began as the Solar Energy Research Institute in 1977 under President Jimmy Carter and was designated a national laboratory Sept. 16, 1991, by President George Bush.
