David Reynolds Thorne, 69, of Iuka, MS, passed away of natural causes and entered Glory on July 2, 2018. When Christ was asked what the greatest commandment was, he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22: 37-39. A lifelong resident of Iuka, David Thorne loved the Lord and he loved his neighbors.

Visitation is scheduled for 5:00 until 8:00 p.m., Monday, July 2, at Cutshall Funeral Home in Iuka. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 3, at the Iuka Baptist Church, officiated by Bro. Johnny Hancock and Josh Shideler. The body will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to service time. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers include Michael Thorne, Destin Moore, Tim Cook, Larry Nunley, Luke Crowell, Marcus Hooker, Sr., Marcus Hooker, Jr., Marcus Hooker, III, and Daniel Hooker. Honorary pallbearers include the deacons of Iuka Baptist Church. Cutshall Funeral Home of Iuka is entrusted with arrangements.

Born April 25, 1949, to the deceased Evie Lee and E. R. Thorne, David was the youngest of three children, his older brother Reid and wife, Aline, and older sister Janette and husband, Gene, also preceded him in death. He attended Iuka High School before Holmes Community College where he drove the bus for the football team, then graduated from Mississippi State University. While at Miss. State he was a member of the Wayward Warthogs fraternal order. David was also a graduate of the Mississippi School of Banking. He came home to Iuka for his career and married Shelia Hooker. David had one son, Lee and a loved daughter-in-law, Martha Ann.

David loved the Lord. He spent time every night in prayer and reading His Word. David loved his family. Everything he did in this world was to benefit Shelia, Lee, or Martha Ann. David loved Iuka Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for decades. He enjoyed spending his time there and the people that make up the bride of Christ. Finally, David loved First American National Bank. The bank was a second home to David, and his co-workers were family to him. Some even believed First American and Iuka Baptist couldn’t open their doors without David. David was a former member of the Mississippi National Guard and enjoyed serving the Lord through the Gideons as a long-time treasurer. He spent his free time, outside of Iuka Baptist and First American, taking care of the yard, napping, grilling burgers, making chocolate oatmeal cookies, watching Mississippi State sports, and driving his pontoon at Mill Creek.

David is survived by his wife, Shelia; his son, Lee and daughter-in-law, Martha Ann; a nephew, Michael; and nieces, Sandra (Tim), Pam (Larry), and Allison; his brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Mary Ruth Hooker; and his nephews, Mark, Jr. (E) and Dan (Lynn). He was preceded in death by his parents, Evie Lee and E. R. Thorne; a brother, Reid and wife, Aline; a sister Janette and husband, Gene; and a nephew, Matt.

Memorials may be made to The Gideons International, Tishomingo County Camp, P.O. Box 314, Iuka, MS 38852, or online at www.gideons.org, or to the charity of the donor’s choice. An online guestbook may be accessed at www.cutshallfuneralhome.com.
