ATHENS-Online guitar lessons led L.A.-based duo Roses & Cigarettes to schedule a concert in Downtown Athens while on tour in Nashville.

The acoustic concert will be Thursday, June 28, at 7 p.m. on Washington Street in front of High Cotton Arts. Athens Arts League is hosting the concert with the assistance of several sponsors. The concert block party is free for the community. High Cotton Arts and Sylvia Vann’s Little Kitchen Food Truck will be open at 6 p.m.

“We need to do more to tap into our proximity to Nashville and lure more national musical acts to our community,” said Athens Arts League Board President Jennifer Hilton Sampieri, who is taking online guitar lessons from Roses & Cigarettes member Angela Petrilli. “Athens Arts League already supports our amazing local talent, and we need to take advantage of bringing regional and national talent to Athens.”

Roses and Cigarettes is performing this week at the National Association of Music Merchants in Nashville. Sampieri asked Petrilli if the duo would consider a concert in Athens while in Nashville.

“We found a date and found sponsors so that we could offer this as a concert for the community,” Sampieri said.

Roses & Cigarettes formed in Los Angeles in 2013 when the country cover band that Jenny Pagliaro was singing in auditioned Angela Petrilli for a vacant guitar position. Athens concertgoers can expect a blend of rock-n-roll, Americana and roots, Pagliaro said.

“So maybe think of it as a blend of Fleetwood Mac, Patty Griffin, Miranda Lambert and Susan Tedeschi,” she said.

Petrilli added, “You can absolutely expect Roses & Cigarettes to bring our brand of California rock Americana sound. We can’t wait to share our music with the folks of Athens.”

Pagliaro grew up in a household where her mom was an actress and her dad a musician. She had access to a piano, guitar and other instruments. Petrilli said her earliest memories are of her mom playing guitar. Both said a community should embrace the arts and music as a quality of life resource.

“Music brings people together,” Pagliaro said. “You can be at a concert and not know anyone around you and bond over the music and feel like best friends. Creating and sharing art creates a sense of community that you can’t find sitting at home watching Netflix. It gives a community a reason to come together and celebrate.”

Petrilli said music is a universal language that brings people together in “so many beautiful ways.”

“From sitting around a campfire to going to a concert, music brings about joy like nothing else,” Petrilli said.

Both plan to visit Scout Music House and a violin camp underway this week High Cotton Arts. Scout Music House is under renovation and will be a music venue operated by Athens Arts League. High Cotton Arts is a visual arts incubator operated by Athens Arts League.

The pair writes their own songs, which is one area Athens Arts League wants to address with programming at Scout Music House.

“We write all of our songs, although we love doing covers as well,” Pagliaro said. “The lyrics are definitely inspired by real life, but also sometimes an idea hits you, and you just create a story.”

Pagliaro has relied on her love of music while battling Stage IV breast cancer for three years.

“Music is what brings me the most amount of joy in this life,” she said. “Both of us believe in the healing power of music. Music connects people and truly brings people together.”
