A Celebration of Life Service for The Reverend Ronald M. Thatch will be noon Saturday at Mount Zion C.P. Church in America with Pastor James Robinson officiating and interment in the Thatch Cemetery. The body will lie in repose one hour prior to the service. Family visitation will be Friday from 6 to 7 p.m. at Reynolds Funeral Home.
The Reverend Ronald Marvin Thatch, 63, died on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 in Decatur. From his birth on March 8, 1955, on a farm near Mooresville, in the loving and caring community of Mount Zion until his death on Wednesday. He was nourished with the Word of God. He was the youngest of nine children born to the late Elder John Humphrey and the Reverend Martha Ray Thatch. He confessed hope in Jesus Christ, accepted Him as his Savior, and was baptized at an early age.
Rob, as he was affectionately called, was known to be an outstanding student. He attended Greenbrier Elementary School, Mooresville-Belle Mina Junior High School and graduated from Tanner High, graduating from high school in 1973. He was a scholar, winning The Spelling Bee for Limestone County. After graduating from high school, he attended Alabama A&M University and Huntsville Bible College.
Reverend Thatch was an avid reader of the Bible. He began ministerial studies after college and became a minister ordained by the Huntsville Presbytery of the Alabama Synod of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America. His ministerial service included serving as Sunday school secretary and Associate Minister of Mount Zion C.P. Church in Mooresville, and Associate Minister of West End Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville, Tennessee.
Rob will be remembered for his incredible, encyclopedic mind. It was like a database filled with all types of facts. He was very good with sports trivia. You could ask him anything about sports and he knew the answer. It was like he was on a game show and answers would just roll off his tongue! Amazing! And of course, he knew the Bible. We would call and ask him which Scripture could be used for a certain situation or occasion and he would give the appropriate one to use. What a Beautiful mind and gentle spirit.
He leaves to cherish his memory: two brothers, the Reverend John Issac Thatch of Mooresville and Cornell (Marilyn Jean) Thatch of Riverdale, Georgia; four sisters, Marilyn Dennis of Decatur, Annie Harris of Chicago, Illinois, Essie Hammonds (Ferdinand) of Madison and Ernestine Nell Watts of St. Louis, Missouri; an aunt, Ollie Mae Locklayer (David); a host of nieces, nephews and relatives.
Active pallbearers will be nephews and honorary pallbearers with be Elders and Deacons of Mount Zion C.P. Church. Active Flower Bearers will be nieces and honorary flower bearers will be mothers of Mount Zion C.P. Church.
