ATHENS-Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson issued a statement on Monday, June 25  concerning the arrests of two suspects for Attempted Murder. The attempted murder took place on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 in the Canebrake Subdivision in Athens:

“Friday afternoon Lt. Chris Slaton, Investigator Jonathan Caldwell and investigators with investigators with the Giles County TN Sheriff’s Department arrested Michael Stanley Putman close to Veto, TN on a warrant from Limestone County for attempted murder. Late Friday evening Putman waved exertion and was transported back to Athens. Putman was booked at the at the police department and transferred to the county jail.

Today Lt. Slaton has obtained a warrant for attempted murder for Samantha Leigh Davis of Athens she is 24 years old. Davis is currently in the Limestone County Jail on unrelated charges. She is being booked at the police department at this time and will be returned to the county jail shortly. Lt. Slaton also obtained an attempted murder warrant for Stanley Eugene Birdsong 33 of Elkton TN. Birdsong is currently being held in the Giles County Jail on unrelated charges. When he is released from

Samantha Leigh Davis

Giles County Jail we have a hold on him on our warrant.

On June 6, 2018 the police department received a call to the 23000 block of Founders Circle in the Canebrake Subdivision in Athens. When officers arrived they located a 34-year-old male inside the residence that had been shot one time in his chest. The man was flown by Med-Flight to Huntsville Hospital. He has since been released.

The victim in this case was living in his parent’s residence till the residence can be sold, his parents had moved to Florida a while back. He did have their permission to be in the residence. We believe Davis called Birdsong and Putman to come from Tennessee to Athens to go with her to the residence on Founders Circle to get drugs and $80.00 back taken from Davis the night before by the victim. Once everyone was in the residence for a short time the victim was shot with a 22 caliber pistol. The drugs this incident was over was Methamphetamine, Suboxone and Xanax.

Stanley Eugene Birdsong currently in the Giles County, TN jail

Investigators and officers from our department have worked day and night to bring this case to the point of making an arrest. The hard work and dedication to keep the citizens of our community safe resulted in these arrest and warrants being issued. Numerous people of interest have been intervened and hours of video surveillance have been watched. I would also like to thank Sheriff Kyle Helton of the Giles County Sheriff’s Office and his investigators for all their assistance in this case.”
