Jack David Lard, 81, of Florence, departed this life on June 9, 2018, after a brief illness.  Visitation will be Tuesday, June 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Woodmont Baptist Church, with the funeral following at 12:00 p.m. in the Worship Center.  Burial will follow at Greenview Memorial Park.

Jack was born in Waterloo, Alabama on August 29, 1936.  As a young man he moved to Florence to attend Florence State College where he earned his college degree and where he met Janice Vawter, to whom he would be married for 60 years.

Jack spent the majority of his career in insurance sales working for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company followed by a career with AFLAC Insurance.  Jack was an active member of Woodmont Baptist Church, where he served in many capacities and most recently was a member of the choir.  He was an avid sports fan and often coached his sons’ sports teams.  He was a passionate UNA athletics supporter and a member of the UNA Sportsman’s Club.  A few of his many interests included woodworking and gardening.  In recent months, he has been a regular volunteer at ECM Hospital.

Jack led an exemplary life.  He was the model of devotion to his wife, children, extended family and friends.  He was a humble servant of God, always seeking opportunities to serve others and treating everyone with respect.  His kindness and generosity were hallmarks of his character.  He exemplified Jesus’ teachings found in Matthew 22:37-39, which reads “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  This is the great and first commandment.  And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (ESV).

Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Janice, their son Mike Lard, his parents Earl and Winnie Lard and his many siblings.

Jack is survived by his sons, Jeff Lard (Rhonda); Chuck Lard (Rebecca); Brad Lard (Nancy); daughter-in-law Bobbie Rumley (Charles); grandchildren Alan Lard (Kayla), Ashley Gist (Jeremy), Tyler Lard (Jenna), Clint Patterson (Alex), Kris Lard, James Lard, Catherine Lard, Josh Lard (Carrie) and Dylan Lard (Erin); great-grandchildren Brieann Lard, Peyton and Paxton Gist, Macie Grace and Layla Jane Lard, and Ezra Lard.  Those wishing to make a donation in lieu of flowers may send donations to the Home of Grace at www.homeofgrace.org or to the Salvation Army.

Pallbearers will be Josh Lard, Dylan Lard, Tyler Lard, Alan Lard, Kenny Shook and Johnny Lard.
