FLORENCE-The Music Preservation Society, Inc. (MPS) announces its 2018 Handy Festival Design Competition winner has been chosen.  Artists of all ages were invited to participate in the contest to have their creation compete to be the featured design on 2018 W.C. Handy Music Festival brochures, official posters and t-shirts, and other marketing materials. Entries were judged on merit, suitability as a visual image, originality, and how well the design reflects the spirit of the Festival.

The design, submitted by Sherry Pratt, fit all the criteria and was selected by the MPS board members.  Sherry Pratt resides in Huntsville. She is a Graphic Design and Web Communications Student at UAH where her instructor encouraged students to enter the contest.

Sherry has spent some time in Florence studying the architecture of Wilson Dam and how it relates to ancient artist design.  When asked what was the inspiration and meaning behind the design, Sherry explains, “After much time thinking about the design, Wilson Dam always came to mind as representing Florence and the Shoals. I felt the symmetry of the dam and piano keys were the perfect way to portray the rich river and music heritage.”

MPS Publicity Chairperson Alison Stanfield stated, “We received numerous entries that were very impressive.  However, Sherry’s design was the standout this year.  The committee loved the use of our iconic Wilson Dam. Signed and unsigned posters featuring the design will be available at the Florence/Lauderdale Tourism Visitor Center June 15.  T-shirts and schedules will be available in the coming weeks.

Sherry and her family have made plans to attend the festival this year and she said, “Knowing so many people are seeing my artwork in this grand scale is very exciting and such and honor.”
