Claude Howard Uhlman, Sr. – Obituary

Claude Howard Uhlman, Sr., of Muscle Shoals, passed away on Thursday, June 7, 2018 at the age of 94. His visitation will be Sunday, June 10, 2018 from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Bro. Larry Smart and Bro. Will Vaden officiating. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery.
A hard worker all his life, Mr. Uhlman was the owner of Uhlman Cotton Gin in Spring Valley for many years and continued to help gin cotton to the age of 80. A WWII Veteran, he served in the South Pacific and fought at Iwo Jima. His passion was gardening and Alabama football. He mowed the lawn and tended his own vegetable garden to age 93. A strong Christian, he helped in the growth of Nitrate City Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and Superintendent of Sunday School and Training Union. His love of family was prominent in his enjoyment of talking with his grandchildren about his childhood and military service.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years and the mother of his children, Mary Jo Gargis Uhlman; his parents, Ernest and Alice Uhlman; brothers, Earnest (Buddy) and William H. (Bill) Uhlman; and sisters, Linda and Alma Underwood and Bernice Gargis.
Claude’s survivors include his loving wife of 21 years, Maurine Uhlman; sons, Howard Uhlman (DeeAnn), Gary Uhlman (Glenda) and David Uhlman (Jeanie); daughter, Penne Uhlman Isbell (Frank); sisters-in-law, Pauline Gargis and Shirley Copeland; brothers-in-law, Douglas Gargis and Hollis Isbell; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Eric, Van, Cory and Lynn Uhlman, Tre White and Lucas Campbell. Honorary pallbearers will be Dion Uhlman, Steve Duvall, Jack, Daniel and Billy Counts, George Foster and Claude’s great-grandsons.
