Paul Herman Schuerer – Obituary

Paul Herman Schuerer, age 83, passed away on June 5, 2018. He was born, the last of three sons, as a first generation American to the late Eberhard and Clara Schuerer, October 9, 1934, in St. Louis, Missouri. Paul graduated from Hubbard High School and received his B.S. in metallurgical engineering from Youngstown State University. He came to Huntsville, Alabama from Detroit, Michigan while working with Chrysler on military contracts with the Redstone Arsenal. He began working with the Army Ballistic Missile Agency in 1956 and transferred to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 1960. He worked as an engineer and manager at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center until his retirement in 1997.

He was married for forty years to Linda Lou Reed Schuerer, who preceded him in death in 2008. Brothers Norman and Eberhard “Duke” also preceded him in death.

Paul is survived by his two children: Michael Reed Schuerer of Decatur, Alabama, and Paula Ann Schuerer of Franklin, Tennessee.

Paul was an avid outdoorsman in his youth and played golf and racquetball into his eighties. He enjoyed gourmet cooking and fine dining, as well as travel with his family. He took pleasure in participating in the adventures of sky diving, hang gliding and zip lining after retirement. He was an active member of Hillwood Baptist Church for over thirty years and a dedicated servant of Christ.

Visitation will be held June 7, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Laughlin Service Funeral Home in Huntsville, Alabama. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel on June 8, at 1:00 p.m. Afterwards, Paul will be buried at Wright’s Cemetery near McBurg, Tennessee, with a brief graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Paul’s favorite charity, The Salvation Army.
