Leonard “Buddy” O’Neal Canerday, Jr., of Lexington, Alabama, passed away on May 31, 2018 at his home in Lexington Alabama.

Buddy was born in rural Alabama to Leonard O’Neal and Eva Marie Canerday on August 5th, 1944, as the third of what would be eight children. He worked as a plumber for the Lauderdale County Board of Education for 32 years before beginning work as an independent contractor. After retiring from contract work he was regularly seen as the morning greeter at Centerhill Market.

Buddy was a kind and gentle man that made an impression on everyone that crossed his path. He would be the first to call himself stubborn and hard-headed, but he still managed to always focus on doing right by the people that were close to him. The world could use a lot more Buddy Canerdays, and it is a loss for everyone that he is no longer with us.

Buddy is survived by his wife Lori; children: Barry (wife Michelle), Heather Kemp, Carissa Shafto (husband Patrick), and Steven Kemp (wife Trisha); brothers, Jerry (wife Marsha), Larry Joe (wife Patti), Ronald Ray (wife Becky); and sisters, Johnnie, Bonnie (husband Jerry), Debbie (husband Leverle). He will be greatly missed by his five grandchildren, Isaac and Ceileigh Canerday, Kemble and Monroe Shafto, and Miles Allen Kemp.

Visitation will be held at Greenhill Funeral Home on Monday, June 4th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Funeral service will follow at Greenhill Funeral Home at 3 p.m., with Brother Mike Nabors officiating. Burial will follow at Greenhill Cemetery on County Road 144.

Greenhill Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
