Leonard Carl Ramey – Obituary

Leonard Carl Ramey was born August 8, 1933 in Greenville, South Carolina to John Earl and Catherine Arney Ramey. He graduated from Hamlet High School. Carl served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1955 as a member of the 301st Periodic Maintenance Squadron and received the National Defense Service Medal. After discharge, he attended North Carolina State University majoring in mechanical engineering and graduated in 1959.

He married Nellie Elizabeth “Lib” Saunders on May 10, 1953. They were married for 53 years prior to her death. He worked at Western Electric from 1959 to 1974. The family moved to Alabama in 1975 where Carl worked at Teledyne Brown Engineering until his retirement in 1997. Carl loved sports, especially bowling and golf. He bowled until just a few weeks before his death.

Carl was a faithful member of Austinville United Methodist Church, the Good Fellowship Sunday School Class, and the United Methodist Men.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters; Mary, Sue, Alma and Inez; his wife, Lib; and his son, David.

He is survived by his daughter, Ann Ramey Cobb, of Alabaster, his son and daughter in law, Keith and Lisa Ramey, of Trinity; his daughter-in-law, Kathleen Ramey, of Terrell, North Carolina; and his brother, Wade Ramey, of Ormond Beach, Florida.

Carl was especially proud of his grandchildren, Peggy Ramey and Sherry Bloodworth of Burlington, North Carolina, Jennifer and Matthew Merrick of Atlanta, Georgia, Holly and Will Atkinson of Ramseur, North Carolina, Wesley Cobb of Manchester, Tennessee, Jesse and Hannah Ramey of Decatur and Thomas Ramey of Trinity; and great-grandchildren, Mikayla, Lillie, Tucker and Truett.

A celebration of his life will be held Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 3 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with Reverend Dallas Culver officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Austinville United Methodist Church, 908 Lamar Street, Decatur, AL.
