Carl Hugh Palmer, age 81, of Phil Campbell, passed away on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at his residence.

Mr. Palmer was a jack of all trades. He worked for years at Drummond Coal Company in Bessemer. He served 15 years as an Alabama State Trooper, working in Selma during the time of the Selma Marches and even served as the bodyguard for George & Lurleen Wallace. He enjoyed his five years of being a missionary in Honduras. While living in the Vance & Tuscaloosa area, he was a funeral director and embalmer for Valley Chapel, Sunset Chapel, and Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel, where he was fondly known by his friends as “Undertaker”. He loved gardening, riding and raising horses, just being a country boy at heart. His family will most remember him as a fine Christian man, who loved his Lord with all of his heart and loved all of his family. He will be missed by all who knew him.

The visitation will be 1:00 – 3:00 Sunday, May 20, 2018 at Spry Memorial Chapel in Russellville. The funeral will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel with his brother, Tommy Palmer and Bro. Brian Scott speaking at the service. Burial will follow at Knights of Pythias Cemetery, Russellville, AL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, David Carl Palmer and Nancy Emma Conway Palmer; brother, Billy Wayne; and sister, Earline Palmer.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 20 years, Renay Melton Palmer; children, Donna Palmer Cooper (husband, Daryl), Hugh Dale Palmer (wife, Ann), David Carl Palmer (wife, Kathy), Sherrie Ennis (husband, Jzyk) Steve Jones (wife, Denise); numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who he loved deeply; sisters, Pauline Stidham, Doris Cochran; brother, Tommy Palmer; and a host of nieces & nephews.

The pallbearers will be friends and family.

The family would like to extend a special note of gratitude to the nurses and staff of Amedisys Hospice and the many family and friends for your love and care of our family.

Spry Memorial Chapel assisted the family.
