William “Miles” Greer – Obituary

William “Miles” Greer of Huntsville, AL, passed away on April 20th, 2018, at the age of 74.  He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ann Laird Greer; their two sons, Michael Greer (Sloan) of Milton, Georgia and Stephen Greer of Atlanta, Georgia; four grandsons, Cole Greer, Jason Greer, Miles Greer and Owen Greer; brother, Frank (Nellie Jo); sister, Carolyn; and sisters-in-law, Phyllis Harrell and Jean Hinson; and nieces, nephews, and many great -nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Christine Greer; brother, Milton “Mickey” Greer; and brother-in-law, William “Bill” Hinson.

Miles was born in Douglas, Georgia on August 25th, 1943.  He graduated from Coffee County High School and then Auburn University in 1965 earning a degree in Industrial Engineering.  While at Auburn he was a leader, serving many roles in his fraternity Sigma Pi. He was also a graduate of Harvard’s Advanced Management Program contributing to several executive management books.

He married Ann Laird on November 7th, 1965.  Miles served in the Air National Guard for several years.  For the majority of his career, he served as an executive of Savannah Electric and then Vice-President of the Southern Company living in Savannah, Georgia.  Mr. Greer was a leader in his church, first Wilmington Island United Methodist and then Isle of Hope United Methodist participating on many committees and offering service in any way he could.  He was active in many community and civic organizations, including the Rotary Club, the board of the YMCA, and Leadership Savannah. He also served as President of Hospice Savannah Inc. Board of Directors.

Miles retired in 2005, moving to Huntsville, Alabama where he and Ann built a home near his brother-in-law, Bill Hinson, who was his best friend.  Miles also found a new home in Huntsville First United Methodist Church where he served as an usher and an active member of the Faith Sunday School Class.  He loved spending time fishing with his grandsons and could often be found on the tractor mowing the fields around his home. Miles will always be remembered by his family and friends for his million small acts of kindness, and as a gentle, faithful, servant leader.

Visitation will be at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, April 25th at Huntsville First United Methodist Church and the service will follow at 2:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Huntsville First United Methodist Church.
