John Will Caylor – Obituary

John Will Caylor passed away April 13, 2018.  He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Jane, daughter Molly Hollis (Curtis), granddaughter Abby Hollis, and grandson Nicholas Hollis.  John was a loving husband, dad, and grandad.  He was devoted to his family.

John Will received his Bachelor’s degree from Athens State College and his Doctor of Jurisprudence from Cumberland School of Law.  He taught on the secondary and college level for over 20 years while practicing law.   Before beginning work with the State of Alabama in 1970, John was a Huntsville police office and juvenile police detective.    He worked for four attorney generals during his service in state government.  He was Chief Courts Planner for the Alabama Law Enforcement Planning Agency and served as the Chief Courts and Prosecution Planner for the Alabama Securities Commission.  One of John’s proudest career accomplishments was in 1973.  He served with then Chief Justice Howell Heflin to rewrite Article VI, the Judicial Article, of Alabama’s 1901 Constitution.  Upon leaving state government, John returned to Huntsville and served as the first Director of the Pre-Trial Release Program.  He then opened a private law practice in Huntsville beginning in 1978.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 18 at 11:00 a.m. at Maple Hill Cemetery with The Reverend Dr. Virginia Monroe officiating.  In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations to The Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center, 601 Preston Building, Nashville, TN 37232.
