TUSCUMBIA-On April 28, 2018 from 10 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., Express
Care of the Shoals Urgent Care and Walk-In clinic, 1106 North Cave Street,
Tuscumbia, in partnership with the Tuscumbia Police Department and the Colbert
County Drug Task will be a host site for the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National
Drug Take- Back Day and serve as a location for Fingerprinting for Kids. According to
the DEA, expired, unused, or unwanted prescription medications are a public safety
issue. Unused drugs thrown in the trash can be retrieved and abused or illegally sold.
Unused drugs that are flushed contaminate the water supply. Proper disposal of unused
drugs saves lives and protects the environment.
“We are extremely grateful to the Tuscumbia Police Department and the Colbert County
Drug Task Force for their assistance with this community safety event,” said Susanna
Hall, CRNP at Express Care of the Shoals. “Prescription drugs are an invaluable tool for
treating many illnesses and injuries when used properly. Unfortunately they can be as
dangerous as street drugs when taken without a prescription or a health care provider’s
supervision. Taking back prescription drugs and fingerprinting children are two free,
quick, and convenient ways in which we can make our community healthier and safer,”
she added.
According to Tuscumbia Police Chief Tony Logan, the Tuscumbia PD welcomes the
opportunity to participate in community events like this. “Given the current opioid
epidemic in our country, it is more important than ever for law enforcement to be
proactive in providing an opportunity for the correct disposal of substances that might
result in overdose, abuse or accidental poisoning. In addition, parents should seriously
consider bringing their children by to obtain a set of fingerprints. In the unthinkable
event of a missing child, a set of fingerprints is an invaluable tool for locating them.
Fingerprints are unique and don’t change over time,” said Logan.
Express Care of the Shoals is conveniently located at the corner of Avalon Avenue and
Cave Street, across from Helen Keller Hospital. This is a free, community-wide event.
