Cell Phone Helps Catch A Thief In Athens

ATHENS-Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson issued a statement concerning a robbery on Wednesday, April 4 in the parking lot of the Hampton Inn on Kelli Drive:

“On Wednesday night, April 4 shortly after 11:30 the police department was notified of a robbery that had just occurred in the parking lot of the Hampton Inn on Kelli Drive.

The victim told officers they were unloading luggage from the vehicle when a silver Honda pulled behind them. The victim had her purse around her neck and body when a male told her to give him her purse. He then reached and grabbed the purse and cut the strap with a knife. He then ran toward his vehicle, the victim pursued him and grabbed his shirt. The victim fell scraping both of her knees.

In the victims purse was her iPhone. Officers were able trace the phone and see the phone was at Walgreen’s in Madison. Madison Police Department was notified and was able to locate the suspect’s vehicle in the parking lot. The suspect left and went east on US72. Madison officers were able to stop the car at HWY72 and Jeff Road. Investigator Jonathan Caldwell arrested Robert Leslie Worley for one count of robbery first degree. Worley was transported back to Athens where he was booked and transferred to the county jail.”
