Flor-Ala Staff Members Bring Home Mark of Excellence Awards

FLORENCE– Current and former staff members of the Flor-Ala were recently honored for being finalists in the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Awards.

The University of North Alabama student news organization competed against student news organizations from Region 3, which comprises Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The following UNA students/Flor-Ala staff members were finalists:

  • Life Editor Tyler Hargett, Feature Writing, for the Uncovered Secrets series.
  • Incoming Managing Editor Harley Duncan, General News Reporting, for “New policy affects student refund checks.”
  • Former Videographer Hillary Taylor, Breaking News Reporting, for “Update on fraternity house fire.”
  • Former Sports Editor Jacob Cole, Sports Writing, for “Wallace adds honor to legacy.”

Honorees received award certificates at the SPJ Region 3 Spring Conference & Freelance Blitz at the College of Charleston the weekend of March 24.

The Flor-Ala also received three awards from the Southeast Journalism Conference Best of the South competition in February at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas.

The award recipients included:

  • Executive Editor Monday Sanderson, Best Opinion-Editorial Writer, second place.
  • Graphic Designer David San Miguel, Best News Graphic Designer, second place.
  • The Flor-Ala, Best College Newspaper, eighth place.
