Poetry Reading: Two-Face God by Jason McCall
Wednesday, April 4, 6:00 pm

Jason McCall, poet and UNA Assistant Professor of English, will visit FLPL to perform a reading and lead a discussion on his new poetry collection Two-Face God

The hard truth of Jason McCall’s Two-Face God is this: there is no space in this world without duality, without the glossy surface and the hidden darkness, that always pushes through and must be reckoned with. From love, to history, to memory, to race, these poems probe this duality.

The free film series The Screening Room: Classics, Crowd-Pleasers, Cult Favorites and Neglected Gems continues its 2018 lineup with a screening of The Gold Rush (1925).

In this classic silent comedy, the Little Tramp (Charles Chaplin) heads north to join in the Klondike gold rush. Eventually able to leave the cabin, he falls for a lovely barmaid (Georgia Hale), trying valiantly to win her affections. When the prospector needs help locating his claim, it appears the Tramp’s fortunes may change.

The series — sponsored by the library and Pillar of Fire — is hosted by film historian and Pillar of Fire founder Terry Pace and his wife, Anita. Admission is free.

The Thunder of Thor with WAFF Meteorologist Brandon Spinner
Saturday, April 14, 1:00 pm

Brandon Spinner, meteorologist for WAFF 48 News, will visit Florence-Lauderdale Public Library to give an all-ages talk about the Thunder of Thor! As King Odin points out to his son in the film Thor: Ragnorak, Thor is not the god of hammers. His powers come from his ability to control thunder and lightning, and Brandon Spinner will talk about the science and power behind these weather elements. There will also be other fun Thor and weather related activities, as well as plenty of books you can check out to learn more.
