ATHENS-One person sustained smoke inhalation Monday morning (March 26) in an apartment fire in Athens.

Athens Fire and Rescue Chief Bryan Thornton said firefighters David Kress and Brandon Wilson heard someone moan and felt the man on the floor in the kitchen. They rescued the man, and an ambulance transported him to Athens-Limestone Hospital.

Athens Fire and Rescue responded to the fire call at Oakleaf Apartments on Elkton Street at 9:29 a.m. The fire was in Apartment 23. Thornton said Apartment 24 sustained water damage.

Since the fire resulted in an injury, the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s office will conduct an investigation as to the cause of the fire.

The injured man’s name was not immediately available. Further information about his medical condition will need to come from officials with Athens-Limestone Hospital.
