William Donald “Don” Parker – Obituary

Funeral for William Donald “Don” Parker, 89, of Moulton, will be today, March 14, 2018, at 2 p.m. at Moulton Church of Christ with O.D. Bowling officiating, George Nancarrow, Andy White and Denny Bowling assisting, Parkway Funeral Home directing. Burial will be in Moulton Memory Gardens. Visitation will be two hours before the service at the church.

Mr. Parker died Sunday, March 11, 2018, at Floyd E. “Tut” Fann Veteran’s Home. He was born March 14, 1928, to Arthur Fennel Parker and Ida Thompson Parker in Iuka, Mississippi. Mr. Parker was a dedicated member of Moulton Church of Christ. He retired from the Lawrence County Board of Education, having served as class room teacher, coach, school principal, guidance counselor and Superintendent of Education. He also retired from the Alabama National Guard where he was active for 20 years. He was a member of the American Legion, Moulton Lions Club, the Lawrence County Retired Teachers Association and the National Education Association.

Mr. Parker was born with a lot of determination to succeed. He joined the United States Army at the age of 17, during WWII. When the war ended, he was discharged and finished his high school education. He then enrolled at Florence State Teachers College, now UNA. He was a “walk-on” on the football team and later received a scholarship. Also, at Florence State, he joined the ROTC program finishing as a Commissioned Officer. He also attended George Peabody College, extending his education through various courses designed for education. He again was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. After retirement, he was appointed branch manager of the former First Federal Bank of Moulton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Edward Parker, A. F. Parker, Jr. and James “Sonny” Parker; and sisters, Christine Culver and Lorene Waits.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Jean Bowling Parker; and daughter, Pamela J. Parker.

Pallbearers will be Denny Parker, Keith Parker, Lanny Parker, Joey Parker, Roger Bowling and Kent Bowling.
