TUSCUMBIA-The City of Tuscumbia has received several questions concerning the installiation of a speed bump on Hook Street.  Mayor Kerry Underwood released a statement addressing the questions:

A Message From The Mayor:

“In the interest of transparency, I would like to take a moment to respond to some questions that we have had regarding the speed hump that is being installed on Hook St.

1) Why is this necessary? We ran a traffic study of Hook St after receiving numerous complaints. We discovered that, between 2:30 and 3:30pm, the average speed of a car traveling down this road is 50mph, in a 35mph speed zone. Some vehicles were routinely traveling over 70mph. A speed hump is proven to be the most effective way to address a problem like this.

2) Why are we installing a speed hump before fixing the road? We have approved a project to repave Hook St, and are working on finalizing the funding now.

3) Why can’t we install a traffic light instead? A traffic light costs approximately $250,000 to install. We hope to install one at some point, but for now, a speed hump is a cheap temporary solution that will help keep people safe. We have more pressing needs for road money right now. Also, we cannot install a traffic light on Hwy 72, as that road is controlled by the state, and they will not allow one to be installed there.”

It is also important to note that the speed hump that we are installing is a temporary one that can be removed and relocated at a later date.

I hope this answers the questions that have been posed.”
