LAUDERDALE COUNTY-On Monday, March 5 the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office issued a release concerning a scam involving the sheriff’s office:
“We have been made aware of a new scam involving a subject claiming to be a Lauderdale County Deputy.
The subject calls from a number which appears on caller ID to be a legitimate number of the Sheriff’s Department. The subject then informs his intended victim that they have a warrant or have missed a court date (or some other variation) and threatens the victim with arrest unless they pay a fine. This usually involves withdrawing a large amount of money and wiring it to the offender.
As a reminder we do not conduct this type of business over the phone and will never ask for anyone to wire or transfer money.”
