Oscar Elam Holder – Obituary

Oscar Elam Holder, 84, departed this life on February 24, 2018, at his home in Lynchburg, Va, following a short battle with cancer. He was born March 9, 1933, in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, but grew up in Red Bay, Alabama, where he was a 1951 graduate from Red Bay High School. Anyone who met Oscar knew that he met no strangers and always shared a laugh or joke. His happy outlook was memorable to those who met him and his generosity, humor, and tenacious spirit will be sorely missed by those who loved him. Oscar was devoted to animals, his family, University of Alabama football, bluegrass music and travel.

Oscar is survived by his devoted “children”, stepdaughter  – Leslie Hudson and her husband, Vincent May, both of Bedford, Va. His loving extended family who will keep his spirit alive through stories and laughter includes his brother – Duard Holder, Jr. and sister-in-law Mary Alice Holder of Florence, AL; his brother – Leroy Holder and sister-in-law Mary Belle Holder of White House, TN; nieces  – Carol, Wanda, Ines, and Claudia; nephews – Danny, Terry, Donald; their families; special friend and care-giver, who is now family – Debra; and the littlest of all – Charlie-Boy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Duard Holder and Audrey Huddleston Holder of Red Bay, AL and his wife, Anneliese “Lisa” Voemel Holder of East Prussia, Germany.

Oscar will be laid to rest following a short graveside service Thursday, March 1, 3 p.m. at the Holder Family Cemetery in Mississippi with Bro. A.G. Stepp officiating. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, AL will be in charge of arrangements.

The family wishes to thank those who helped in Oscar’s care especially the teams with Generation Solutions and New Century Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations in Oscar’s memory to Bedford Humane Society, 829 Ole Turnpike Drive, Bedford, VA 24523 or to Lymphoma Research Foundation, 88 Pine Street, Suite 2400, NY, NY 10005.
