TUSCUMBIA – Senator Bobby Denton, one of the area’s most esteemed citizens, also considered one of the area’s most talented individuals, will present a concert of old-time hymns, gospel songs, spirituals and secular songs of inspiration at historic St. John’s Episcopal Church in Tuscumbia, Alabama, at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 7. Denton, who retired as Senior Senator from the Alabama Legislature in 2010, after 32 year of service, is known as Alabama’s “Singing Senator.”

Ninon Parker, Trustee of St. John’s Church, expressed gratitude to Sen. Denton, who has dedicated all proceeds raised through his concert to the preservation of the historic church.

No admission will be charged, but donations will be accepted.

Senator Denton was filmed and photographed at St. John’s Church when he released a video for an album produced in 1996 following his return to his singing career.  Bobby was first known as a teen singing star during the 1950’s when his recording of the song ‘A Fallen Star’ drew national attention and landed him a spot on the popular American Bandstand TV Show featuring Dick Clark.  Rather than pursue this promising career, Bobby elected to marry his high school sweetheart, Barbara.  Their marriage has endured for 55 years. The public is invited to join Bobby and his family for this inspiring afternoon.

“Ever since I visited St. John’s Church for the filming of that video, I have wanted to return to sing in that special place.”  Denton described his feelings as he made plans for the upcoming concert.

“I love the Lord and am grateful for what He has done for me and for my family.  This is one way that I can pay tribute to Him and provide a blessing for others and for this historic church.  I look at it often and want others to view it, joining me there to share the old hymns and songs of inspiration that we all love,” Denton said.

Built in 1855, St. John’s is one of Alabama’s oldest wooden Gothic churches.  The church is maintained as a landmark structure through the generosity of donors.  Though closed for regular services since 1955, the building remains a consecrated house of worship.  Beautiful stained glass windows, original pews and other furnishings, as well as excellent acoustics enhance any musical experience at the church.
