Doris Whitten Smith, 94, passed away Monday, February 19, 2018.  Visitation will be Friday, February 23, 2018 from 11 AM-1PM at Greenview Funeral Home.  The funeral service will follow at 1 PM in the Greenview Chapel with Pastor John Brock officiating. Burial will be in the Walston Cemetery on County Road 15 in the Oakland community in Lauderdale County.

Doris was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years, Robert Ganum Smith, Jr., and her eldest son, Robert Ganum Smith, III.  Doris was the last surviving child of Luther and Beulah Whitten, who preceded her in death. Her brothers and sisters who preceded her in death were Bill Whitten, Wilburn Whitten, LL Whitten, Jack Whitten, Lorene Dhority, Dorothy Cox, and James Howard Whitten.

Doris is survived by her sons Randall Lawrence Smith, Christopher Adam Smith (Sara), and daughter Robin Smith Bowers; grandsons Christopher Adam Smith, Jr., and William Nicholas Smith; granddaughters Kimberly Smith Davis and Courtney Elizabeth Smith; great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Doris served our country, along with her twin sister Dorothy, as a member of the United States Navy Waves in World War II. Doris was patriotic and proud of her service to her country.

Doris was a loyal and faithful member of Highland Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir.  She loved her church and was a devout Christian lady who practiced her faith with devotion, kindness, and humility.

Doris was retired from the Tennessee Valley Authority, where she worked in the Safety Office and met and befriended many employees of TVA.

Our mother was a loving, sweet person who always sought out the best in people and life’s situations.  She loved music and was a member of the Sweet Adelines singing group for many years.  Just last week, as her life’s journey neared its end, she sang “This Little Light of Mine” to the delight of all around her.

Most importantly, our mother was the rock and foundation of our family. We can truly say that we never met a person who had an unkind word to say about our mother. She was a special person with a sweet soul, and we were blessed to be her family.

Pallbearers for Doris Whitten Smith will be Christopher Adam Smith, Jr., Bart Whitten, John Lightfoot, David Rice, Gil Self, and Ralph Holt.

The family would like to thank the kind and loyal staff at Green Oaks Inn Assisted Living Home.  Their aid and kindness to our mother will never be forgotten. We would also like to thank the personnel of Hospice Tennessee Valley for helping our mother complete her life’s journey.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation in Doris Smith’s name to the charity or local church mission of your choice.
