FLORENCE-Shoals residents looking for babysitters, pet-sitters, or tutors will have an opportunity to meet local students they can hire at the Teens Lend a Hand event. The event will be at Florence-Lauderdale Public Library on Saturday, March 3, from 10am-2pm. Teens who offer these services, including babysitters certified through the American Red Cross, will be on hand to talk to prospective clients.

Jaimee Hannah, the library’s Young Adult Department Supervisor, is excited to offer students a chance to network and find opportunities. “We have so many smart, capable, and driven teens in this area,” said Hannah. “They impress me every day with how compassionate and responsible they are. This event is a great way for the community to see what these teens have to offer families in the Shoals.”

The effort began earlier this year when the library offered a free American Red Cross babysitting class to local teens. The Teens Lend a Hand event is the library’s next step in empowering teenagers to bring their services to the community, expanding to include babysitting, pet-sitting, and tutoring.

The event is not only a service for teens, however, but also for busy families. Jessica Fenn Hill, Youth Services Director said, “Local families, especially those with young kids, are so busy with jobs, school, extracurricular activities, and other obligations. They often need a hand but maybe don’t know where to go to find it. This event will let them meet and talk to multiple teens in one place to find a good fit for their family.”

Teens Lend a Hand is made possible by Helping Hands, who also sponsored the babysitting training. Helping Hands is the volunteer auxiliary of Shoals Hospital and ECM, with over 150 volunteers who provide services to both hospitals.
