ST. FLORIAN-On Friday morning, February 16 ST. Florian mayor Don Strait dies at 70 after a brief illness.

Strait, who has served on the Town Council, was in his second term as mayor. He was elected in August 2012, defeating one opponent. He ran unopposed in 2016.  He spent a little more than five years in office. As mayor he expanded town lines and campaigned to have a red light installed. Strait eagerly sought out  new businesses to expand in the town.

Town Councilman Matt Connolly said Mayor Strait had been in the hospital since late January.

The mayoral position in St. Florian is a part-time position and Mayor Pro-tem Jamie Eckl has been presiding over meetings. Eckl will continue to do so until a new mayor is named.

The council can appoint someone from the council to the mayor’s position, or it can appoint someone from within the town. According to the state statute the position must be filled within 60 days.
