ATHENS-Athens held their annual Mardi Gras Block Party. This years parade…Parade With A Purpose and it turned out wonderfully. The event collected over 300 cans of food for the LCCI food bank as spectators deposited canned goods in shopping carts decorated as Mardi Gras floats. The party is hosted by the Athens State Artheads and Athens Arts League.

Athens State Art Professor Gail Bergeron decided to bring the Mardi Gras fun to Downtown Athens several years ago. Each year the Athens Mardi Gras Block Party has grown, and this year, thanks to a brain storming session at our Athens Arts League Board meeting, we dubbed our parade a Parade With A Purpose.

I love my Athens community because y’all bought into the idea, and we collected over 300 cans of food – including Gail’s favorite of red beans and rice – for the local food bank.
