ATHENS-Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson released a statement concerning a fire that had been reported on Monday morning, Febrary 12:

“This morning shortly after 9:00 the police department received a call to assist the Athens Fire Department at the Bomar Inn on US 31. Before officers could arrive we had mutable reports of smoke coming from one of the rooms.

When Officer Jason Threet arrived one of the firemen told him the fire originated near or on one of the beds. Investigation of the scene by fire department personal and our investigators determined there is a high probability there was an explosion in the room.

Investigators gathered evidence and it will be sent to the lab to determine the substance in the containers and hopefully the cause of the fire and explosion. Investigators have been able to determine the room was not occupied at the time of the fire.

At this time the investigation into this case continues, no arrests have been made at this time. .”
