Clyde Milton Sasser, age 88, of Decatur died peacefully on the morning of February 1, 2018, surrounded by family. He was born on January 19, 1930, in Baron, Louisiana as the son of the late Richard and Agnes Mabou Sasser. After graduating high school at Buckeye High School in Deville, Louisiana, he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He volunteered and enlisted in the Army, and served as a medic, tanker, and paratrooper during the Korean War. He married Mary Jane Cobb Sasser on April 25, 1959, and they enjoyed a wonderful marriage of 58 years with three children and ten grandchildren.

An incredibly talented businessman and gifted leader, Clyde spent his entire professional career in the poultry industry, working his way through the corporate ranks to retire in 1993 as the President of ConAgra Broiler Company; additionally, he founded and ran his own construction company, lent his expertise to numerous committees and boards, and offered wisdom and counsel to many colleagues and associates.

Outside of work, Clyde invested heavily in his community. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Decatur, Alabama, and before that of the First United Methodist Church in El Dorado, Arkansas; he gave generously of his time and talents to the activities of his church community. He believed deeply in the mission of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), serving as President of the Desoto Area Council in El Dorado, Arkansas and on the executive board for the Greater Alabama Council for the BSA. He was awarded the highest recognition for volunteer service given by the BSA, the Silver Beaver Award. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors and counted himself fortunate to have traveled and hunted all over the world.

But beyond all of his accomplishments and activities, our husband, father, and grandfather was a remarkable man of faith and integrity who loved and cherished his family far beyond his business and outside pursuits. He was the person we all hope to be, bringing compassion, kindness, and a heart for service to every interaction, every day. He passionately loved Mary Jane, encouraged and supported his children and grandchildren in our endeavors, and was always available to offer advice, guidance, or a helping hand. Whether we were spending time around the home, freezing in a duck blind, or traveling together, it was evident to each of us that he not only loved us, but that he enjoyed spending time with us, desired to know our hopes, dreams, and concerns, and cared deeply for each of us. This is the greatest treasure a husband, father, and grandfather can leave his family and we are richly blessed. While we will miss him every day, we will walk ahead as he would want and expect, confident in his faith and our own.

Clyde is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Sasser, his daughter Susan (Gary) Austin, sons Steve (Heather) Sasser and Scott (Kelli) Sasser, and grandchildren Christopher Sasser, Anna (Nicholas) Christian, Sophia Sasser, Jackson Sasser, Alex Austin, Charlie Austin, William (Shelby) Sasser, Andrew Sasser, Matthew Sasser, and Phillip Sasser. He is preceded in death by his mother, Agnes, his father, Richard, and by his siblings Morris Sasser, Herman Sasser, Frank Sasser, James Sasser, Jewel Sasser, Arnie Sasser, Ralph Sasser, Ruth Smith, and Ruby Stevens.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, February 5, 2018 at 12:30, with a visitation at 10:30, at the First United Methodist Church in Decatur. The Reverend Charles Boling will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Memory Café or the Building Fund at the First United Methodist Church, 805 Canal Street NE, Decatur, Alabama, 35601.

We are very appreciative of the staff of Summerford Nursing Home in Falkville, Alabama for caring for our husband, father, and grandfather over the past few months and for all the personal caregivers who cared for and loved Dad in our home, in the hospital, and at the nursing home. Hartselle Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family.
