MONTGOMERY-The Alabama  Department of Public Health are investigating 54 flu related deaths, including one child.

Public health officials say the statewide geographic spread of influenza is at a widespread level, which is the highest the state issues. Six of the state’s seven districts are reporting high levels of influenza. The state has reported a widespread level of influenza since December 11.

The highest number of flu-related deaths per region were reported in the North region, which includes The Shoals, where 12 adults died.

Jefferson County, which ADPH classified as a distinct district, reported 11 deaths under investigation.

The 2017-2018 flu season has particularly affected people 50 and older, and children younger than 4. Historically, people over 65 and young children are the most vulnerable groups during flu outbreaks, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.

The ADPH’s weekly report does not break down non-pediatric deaths by age range.

The hospitalization rate has risen to 41.9 people per 100,000, according to data from the Center for Disease Control. That’s up from fewer than 37 from the week before.

The state health department is offering free flu shots at county health departments. The county health department offices in Colbert, Franklin and Lauderdale counties are offering free flu shots from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on week days.
