ATHENS-Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks presented the annual State of the City Address on Wednesday,  January 31.

The city’s growth, including the value of residential and commercial building permits, which reached $69 million last year is up from about $35.3 million in 2016.  The greatest growth came in the value of new commercial building permits, increasing from $5.67 million in 2016 to about $32.8 million last year. The actual number of projects increased from 17 to 21, the figures show.
One highlight of his presentation was interest from developers for mixed use development projects at the Pilgrim’s Pride site the City bought to eradicate blight and prepare for additional growth due to the Toyota-Mazda facility that will be constructed in Limestone County.
Athens Mayor’s Youth Commissioners Austin Harm and Kourtnee Allen participated in today’s State of the City. Austin lead The Pledge and Kourtnee introduced Mayor Marks.

The Greater Limestone County Chamber of Commerce organized the event,  and Athens State University hosted.
