Loyd “Rooster” Burfield – Obituary

Loyd “Rooster” Burfield, 83, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018. He was a member and deacon of Liberty Hill Baptist

Church in Phil Campbell. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he completed basic training at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina and paratrooper training at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. He was in the National Guard, Russellville unit, for six years and a member of American Legion Post 64. He retired from U.S. Reduction after 30 plus years of service. In addition, he was an avid hunter, fisherman, and beekeeper well known for his delicious honey.

Visitation with family and friends will be today at Pinkard Funeral Home, Russellville, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. with funeral services beginning at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Officiating will be Bobby Poss. Burial will be in Liberty Hill Cemetery, Phil Campbell. Pallbearers will be Hunter Cole, Wesley Holden, Michael Malone, Tim Burfield, Jeff Burfield, and Marvin Gann.

Mr. Burfield is survived by his wife of almost 58 years, Cora Lee Cheek Burfield, and daughters, Lee McFall (John), of Birmingham, Anita Deerman (Rick), of Northport, and Beth Duncan, of Muscle Shoals. Grandchildren include Wesley Holden (Heather), of Russellville, Hunter Cole (Rebecca), of Buhl, Alabama, and Michael Malone (Lisa) and great-granddaughter Makayla Malone, all of Chattanooga. Siblings include Dawson Burfield (Mary Nell), of Spruce Pine, Bill Burfield (Faye), of Phil Campbell, Jim Burfield (Rose), of Rockford, Illinois, Decie Miller (Stan), of Machesney Park, Illinois, Elsie Overton, Hackleburg, and Elaine Johnson (Billy), of Decatur. A host of nieces, nephews, and friends also survive him.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Lonnie and Virgie Swinney Burfield, and siblings, Martha Fincher, J.V. Burfield, and Lavern Burfield.

The family wishes to thank Kindred Home Health and Amedysis Hospice for the professional and compassionate care shown to their loved one during his illness.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to parkinsons.org in honor of Mr. Burfield.
