Postcards… Hula Hoops….Get Out Of Town…All At FLPL

FLORENCE-The Florence-Lauderdale Public Library has a host of fun and educational events scheduled for the rest of January including an exhibit featuring postcards of Alabama historical buildings from the Wade Hall Postcards collection. The exhibit is on display throughout the month of January on the second floor of the library. The exhibit was created by Troy University Libraries and is co-sponsored by the Alabama Humanities Foundation, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The library and the book drop will be closed on Monday, January 15 in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  No items will be due on this day.
Hula Hoop Workshop with Beth Anne Reed
Saturday, January 13, 11:00 am

All ages are invited to this free hula hoop workshop by Beth Anne Reed of BA Hoops! Beth Anne will do a hooping demonstration and lead a hooping class for beginners! Bring your own hula hoop if you have one, or use one of the practice hoops provided at the event. No special clothing is required, but come prepared to hoop!

The Screening Room: North by Northwest

The free film series The Screening Room: Classics, Crowd-Pleasers, Cult Favorites and Neglected Gems begins its 2018 lineup with North by Northwest(1959).
This classic suspense film finds New York City ad executive Roger O. Thornhill (Cary Grant) pursued by ruthless spy Phillip Vandamm (James Mason) after Thornhill is mistaken for a government agent. Hunted relentlessly by Vandamm’s associates, the harried Thornhill ends up on a cross-country journey, meeting the beautiful and mysterious Eve Kendall (Eva Marie Saint) along the way. Soon Vandamm’s henchmen close in on Thornhill, resulting in a number of iconic action sequences.

The series—sponsored by the library and Pillar of Fire—is hosted by film historian and Pillar of Fire founder Terry Pace and his wife, Anita.



The Wade Hall Collection: The Exhibits, the Postcards, and the Stories

Mrs. Ruth Elder from Troy University will give a presentation about the Wade Hall Historical Building Postcards Exhibit, which is on display at FLPL throughout January.The presentation will be an overview of Dr. Hall’s collection of over 25,000 vintage postcards, the creation of the postcard exhibits, and stories of the Alabama represented by these historic cards. The exhibition consists of two parts: the traveling exhibits and the digital exhibit. The Historical Buildings exhibit includes courthouses, post offices, schools, and churches throughout the state. Mrs. Ruth Elder, Troy University Cataloging Librarian, is the main researcher, writer, and organizer for the Wade Hall Postcard Traveling Exhibits. She has two masters degrees and over 35 years of library experience. She moved to Alabama in 2009 and has thoroughly enjoyed learning the history of her adopted state.

Get Out of Town: Southeast Asia
