Minnie Nadean Thornton departed this life on Sunday, January 7th, 2018 surrounded by her family.
Visitation will be Wednesday, January 10th from 4 – 6 p.m. at Rogersville Funeral Home with funeral service following in the chapel with Kevin Chancellor officiating.
Mrs. Thornton was preceded in death by her parents, Jim & Bessie Woodard; brother, Vernon Woodard; sister, Beatrice Parker; husband, George “Hobo” Thornton and son, Norman Thornton. She is survived by her sons, Mickey (Tracey) Thornton and Shawn (Laura) Clay; brother, Sherman Woodard; grandchildren, Trent (Crystal) Thornton, Hollie Thornton, Amanda Thornton and Victoria (Brian) Frost; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Nadean was born on April 30th, 1936 in Parker Cove on Wren Mountain in Lawrence County, Alabama. Nadean and Hobo were married in Iuka, Mississippi in 1956 and in 1957 they began their lives in Rogersville.
Nadean was known by many names: daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt. Most of Rogersville knew her as Miss Hobo or Miss Nadean, but to family and basically anyone who sat at her kitchen table and had a meal, she was simply Memaw.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rogersville and Eastern Star for 57 ½ years. For 55 of those years, she was a mason’s wife. She was the loving heart of the Thornton family. Memaw’s house to a Thornton is another word for home. No matter how early or how late, Memaw was always ready with a smile, hug and definitely a meal. If she couldn’t heal you with a hug, she could at least feed you.
We love you Memaw and we miss you. We are better people because of your love and in our hearts we know that someday we will all be back home in Memaw’s kitchen.
