Mr. Tommie Melvin Smartt, 84, passed away, Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at the Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was born in McMinnville, Tennessee on September 15, 1933 to Marcus and Lillie Smartt who preceded him in death along with his brothers, Leonard, Hoover, Jessie and H.B. Smartt; son, Ronnie “Beaver” Smartt.
He was retired from the State of Tennessee Forestry Service. He was a softball coach in Grundy County turning out some star athletes. He enjoyed listening and singing Blue Grass Music.
He is survived by his son, Ricky Smartt; daughter, Penny Sons; brother, Marcus Smartt Jr.; grandchildren, Whitney (Jeremy) Brown, Cory Smartt, Becky Rymer, Haley and Darin Sons; great grandchildren, Carter and Kyndyl Brown; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Sunday in the funeral home chapel with Minister Charles Childers officiating with burial to follow in the Northcutts Cove Cemetery. Visitation: 4:00 PM – 9:00 PM Saturday at Layne Funeral Home, Altamont, Tennessee. www.laynefuneralhome.com
