John Kahoopakele Kalama – Obituary

John Kahoopakele Kalama died Dec. 10, 2017 in Florence, Alabama. He was a native of Hoolehua, Molokai Hawaii, born on April 6, 1938. There will be a reception and visitation on Wednesday, December 20th from noon until 1 p.m. at Spry-Williams Funeral Home of Florence. A celebration of life will begin at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Brother Larry Burbank officiating.

He served in the U.S. Army for 28 years. After retiring as Sergeant, John resided in Florence, Alabama and formed a landscaping business, naming Keoni Irrigation & Landscaping; this was his passion. He loved working for the public and was very proud of his work. He was a past member of the St. Florian City Council and was loved by many.

He was preceded in death fy father, Richard Kauakahi Kalohi Kalama (1955); mother, Helen Wahineaukai (Kaaihue) Kalama (1997); son, John Kahoopakele Kalama Jr. (2009); brothers, Richard Kauakahi Kalohi Kalama Jr. (2005), James Abraham Mekia Kalama (1983), Joseph “Ataihon” Perkins Kaaihue (2006), Edward Keliikauwila Kalama (1997); sisters, Stella Ululani Loughmiller (1991), Mary Ann Kahalewai Thornton (2001), May Lokelani Nee (1977), Ana Nalaelima Kaahaaina Polsen (1989), Annie Kaui Krueger (2000), and Ann Puanani Kalama (1996).

Surviving family is son, Anthony “Tony” Kaipo Kalama (Gina), of Mt. Prospect, Illinois; sister, Sheila Loretta Polena (Kalama) (Otsuka) Awai, of Kaunakakai, Molokai; brother, Daniel David Loughmiller Kalama (Robin), Hilo, Hawaii; three grandchildren, Marissa, Christian, and Jaxson; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
