James “Jim” Duncan Martin – Obituary

By  | December 5, 2017 | Filed under: Laughlin Service Funeral Home, Obituaries

James “Jim” Duncan Martin went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on Sunday, December 3, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was predeceased by his parents, Jean and Robert Martin, and his niece, Jennifer Allison Martin.

Jim had many accomplishments but nothing brought him more pride and joy than his sons, Taylor and Jared. His greatest pleasures were watching them pursue and excel in their passions of sports and music. Jim never missed an opportunity to watch Taylor play baseball or Jared perform with his band.

Jim, a native Huntsvillian, attended Jacksonville State University where he was a member of Delta Chi fraternity. He graduated from the University of Alabama in Huntsville with a degree in marketing.

Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved the outdoors and often referred to it as “God’s backyard.” He was a champion turkey caller and won many competitions. He was a pro staffer at Cabela’s and participated in many professional demonstrations. He had his own team at Remax where he was certified SFR, CSP, GRI, and CRS, on top of being an associate broker. He was also recognized into the Remax Hall of Fame for his success in real estate. Jim’s love of music truly shined through his singing and his drumming. He played in many groups over his lifetime, but none gave him more joy than those who would cover songs from his favorite band, The Beatles. He most recently played at “New Song” at First United Methodist Church, where he had many loving friends and a true church home. Jim was an athlete all of his life, and incredibly, lettered in five sports during a single year of his high school tenure. He was also a huge fan of the University of Alabama.

He loved his family very much and is survived by his twin sons, Taylor James Martin and William Jared Martin; the mother of his children, Janna Collins, all of Nashville; sister, Melanie McRae (Bruce) of Huntsville; brother, Robert W. Martin, Jr. (Mary) of San Ramon California; niece, Catherine Courtney (Skyler) of Huntsville; nephew, Alex Boles of Birmingham; and two great nephews, Alex Hereford and Campbell Courtney.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, December 7, in the Wesley Center of First United Methodist Church, with Dr. Glenn Conner and the Rec. Coy Hallmark officiating.

The family wishes to thank all of the friends and caregivers that helped make Jim’s last months more comfortable. Among them are Janna Collins, Frederick Lanier, Sam Hall, Richard White, Gary Wolfe, Billy Cooley and the “Angels on Earth” at Hospice. We are forever grateful for all you have done.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making donations in Jim’s name to Hospice Family Care’s inpatient facility or First United Methodist Church’s Cup Ministry.
