Our daddy, granddaddy, great-granddaddy, Jessie Durell Comer, is celebrating with our Maw June in heaven today. He died November 28, 2017, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. He was born November 19, 1927, in Fawn Grove near Dorsey, Mississippi. His parents were Jessie Dorsey (Buck) Comer and Beulah Francis Comer of Dorsey. He was 90 years old.

He grew up in the Fawn Grove community, attending school there until he completed the 6th grade. He then attended school at Dorsey (Bethel Church). He missed a lot of school because as he grew up his family needed him to help with work in the fields, picking cotton, pulling corn, and cutting and storing hay. His best friends growing up were Jay and Lester Brown, Dee Brown, and Joe Bean; they would play “trap’n minnows” in Mantachie Creek. He was saved and baptized at Bethel Baptist Church in Dorsey.

He met his first wife, June Helen Clayton, our Maw June, when he was 16 years old. Their first date was a blind date in which his 1st cousin Lamoine Comer and his girlfriend Wylena Martin, June’s 1st cousin, introduced them and carried them to a movie. As with most young people growing up in the 30’s and 40’s, their dating mostly consisted of going to church. He would walk her home after church services. They were married and raised three children: Janice, Rickie, and Tony.

Durell and June lived in the Greenwood Community– where June had grown up. They attended Greenwood Baptist Church where they were both members and he was elected as a deacon. Together, the two of them worked hard, growing their farm and family. Durell and June started raising broilers when they first got married and continued for many years. When their baby son was born, Durell went to work for DayBrite Lighting in Tupelo. He continued to raise chickens and added beef cattle to the farm.

June died in June of 1981 with breast cancer.
A year later Durell married Lerline Spradling, who had two children, Patti and Ken. Durell and Lerline worked the poultry farm, the beef cattle farm, and started a hay baling operation with step-son, Ken. He retired from DayBrite in 1992. After retirement from DayBrite, he and Lerline traveled endlessly around the country, having traveled to every state except Hawaii before becoming disabled.

Lerline died in March of 2017.
